Energy Market Insights

Weekly Review 13 April 2026 Edition

Power prices have surged, with the spot climbing 20% to £110/MWh. The increase is being driven by escalating tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, gas prices have surged this morning after US–Iran negotiations broke down over the weekend

The UK system remains balanced, as reduced wind generation today is tightening supply conditions. However, a recovery in wind output expected mid-week should ease pressure by lowering gas demand for power generation. Warmer weather is dampening LDZ demand.

Oil and gas prices have risen sharply, with Brent crude climbing back above $100 per barrel (up around 7%) and front-month gas increasing by roughly 10% after US–Iran talks collapsed

Although the US blockade does not directly limit transit through the Strait of Hormuz for routes between non-Iranian ports, it creates substantial uncertainty in shipping patterns—especially for vessels associated with Iranian trade or toll-related payments.
