In a time when energy costs continue to be a top concern for organisations across the UK, it’s surprising how often business energy data and metering are still treated as afterthoughts. While many Energy Managers are already leveraging insights from data to drive efficiency and cut costs, countless businesses have yet to tap into this potential.
But with energy now representing a significant operational risk and a major cost, the ability to capture, understand, and act on usage data has never been more vital.
Unlocking the Value of Business Energy Data
Every business uses energy. But not every business truly understands how, when, and where that energy is being consumed. By analysing detailed consumption data, organisations can uncover waste, identify savings opportunities, and make more informed decisions about operations and investments.
That’s why having the right metering infrastructure in place along with the tools to manage the data it produces is essential. Whether you’re managing a single site or a nationwide portfolio, energy intelligence can lead directly to cost savings and greater operational resilience.
What’s Changing: Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS)
The energy data landscape is set to evolve significantly with Ofgem’s Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) reform. By July 2027, all energy meters in the UK regardless of type, will be settled on a half-hourly basis. That means every site will generate 48 data points per day, enabling much more granular insight into energy use.
For businesses, this shift brings new responsibilities. Rather than passively accepting metering services provided by a supplier, organisations will need to actively decide how to receive, manage, and use this data in ways that support their goals.
Moving from Legacy Meters to Smarter Solutions
Although MHHS does not mandate immediate upgrades to existing non-half-hourly (NHH) meters, businesses still using older ‘dumb’ meters should consider transitioning to smarter solutions such as AMR, HH, or Smart meters ahead of the changes. Doing so now can help you start benefiting sooner from the richer data and deeper insights that MHHS will deliver.
